International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a global observance dedicated to honoring the memory of the millions who suffered and perished during the Holocaust. Held annually commemorating the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, this day serves as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during one of the darkest chapters in human history. It provides an opportunity for individuals worldwide to reflect on the importance of preserving the memory of the Holocaust, educating future generations about the consequences of hatred and prejudice, and reaffirming a collective commitment to preventing such horrors from happening again. Through commemorative events, educational initiatives, and acts of remembrance, people around the world come together to ensure that the stories of those who endured the Holocaust are never forgotten and that the lessons learned are used to promote tolerance, understanding, and peace.

About The Speakers

Arthur S. Berger was a senior official with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for almost 16 years, retiring in June 2016. He had most recently focused on the Museum’s international and diplomatic relations, VIP and Development-related outreach, and aspects of the Museum’s public relations. He has frequently spoken on Holocaust history in the United States as well as in Europe and Japan. In June 2017, Mr. Berger was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights. He had also led a Foreign Affairs discussion group at Oasis, a life-long learning organization in Bethesda, Maryland.

Before joining the Holocaust Museum, Mr. Berger directed public relations and communications at the American Jewish Committee and then at the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, both in New York City.

Previously, in a 25-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, Mr. Berger served in Israel, Uganda, Ethiopia, Brazil and the Netherlands. As Middle East issues spokesman at the Department of State, he was honored as Speaker of the Year by then-Secretary of State George Shultz. He retired as a senior Foreign Service officer in 1995.

A graduate of Yeshiva University, Mr. Berger received a master’s degree from Howard University (with a focus on Africa) and continued his post-graduate studies at the Washington, D.C. consortium of universities researching political leadership in Africa and the Middle East. He was born in Rhode Island, is married, and has two adult sons, two granddaughters and a grandson.
