Each year the Holocaust Center hosts Yom HaShoah, a Day of Remembrance, to remember the six million Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust. Our local Survivors lit candles in remembrance, and an additional candle was lit in honor of the Liberators and Rescuers who stood against the Nazi regime.

A highlight of the program featured a hauntingly beautiful performance of I Remember, a series of excerpts from Anne Frank’s Diary set to music. It was performed by Nina Fine and accompanied by Elizabeth Louise on the harp, Paul Fleury on cello, and Susan Davis on flute. The afternoon also included speeches from board president Mark Freid and from Felicia Epps, dean of FAMU College of Law. The evening ended with a presentation of awards from Resource Teacher Mitch Bloomer, who congratulated the student winners of the Yom HaShoah Creative Arts Contest. The contest seeks to encourage K-12 students to explore the themes of the Holocaust through visual and literary art as well as through research papers.

It was one of three remembrance programs. Other events included Yoga for Remembrance at Winter Park Public Library and a panel discussion on faith and trauma at Rollins College.
